Professorship (W3) in Statistics at KIT

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is our goal to make significant contributions to mastering the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility, and information. For this, about 9300 employees of KIT cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in research, academic education, and innovation.

In Division V - Physics and Mathematics - the KIT Department of Mathematics invites applications for the position of Professorship (W3) in Statistics

at the Institute of Stochastics starting 01.10.2020.

We seek an internationally recognized outstanding scientist in the area of mathematical statistics. Possible research areas include statistical methods for high dimensional and/or big data, mathematical-statistical foundations of machine learning, statistics of complex networks or spatial statistics. The new research group is expected to contribute to the research focus ‘Stochastic Models’ within the KIT Department of Mathematics and to bridge the gap between theory and applications, by collaborating with applied partners (e.g. in the natural sciences, engineering, economics, computer science) at KIT. As a Research University in the Helmholtz Association, KIT offers unique collaborative opportunities, facilitated by the newly founded KIT-Center MathSEE (Mathematics in Sciences, Engineering and Economics) and by broad interdisciplinary research communities. The successful candidate will take part in teaching the broad spectrum of courses in probability and statistics at the Institute of Stochastics. In particular, she or he will assume responsibility for the statistics education of mathematics students and of students in other departments. The appointed professor will take part in the collegial governance of the Institute of Stochastics and the academic self-governance of the KIT Department of Mathematics. She or he is expected to teach (and contribute to governance) in German within a reasonable amount of time.

KIT is an equal opportunity employer. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered if equally qualified.

Applications with the usual resume (including a curriculum vitae, a summary of teaching and research experiences, a teaching and research plan and a list of publications with an indication of the five most important items) should be sent by October 6th, 2019 to Dekan der KIT-Fakultät für Mathematik, Karlsruher Institute für Technologie (KIT), Kaiserstraße 12, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany, preferably in electronic form to For questions concerning the position, Prof. Dr. Nicole Bäuerle can be contacted, phone: +49-721-608-48152, e-mail:
